The internal load-bearing skeleton (within 90 cm of thickness)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ext-animate--on wp-block-paragraph\">We cannot rely on glass for the overall stability of the bridge. The Transparent Envelope: Structural Laminated Glass with Ionoplastic Interlayer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ext-animate--on wp-block-paragraph\">For the transparent part, the material of choice is the <strong>vetro stratificato di sicurezza a elevate prestazioni<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list ext-animate--on\">\n<li class=\"ext-animate--on\"><strong>Composition:<\/strong> At least 3 or 4 sheets of thermally tempered glass (e.g. 10+10+10 mm or higher, to be calculated based on the wind forces at that altitude).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"ext-animate--on\"><strong>The interjection (Fundamental):<\/strong> Do not use the classic PVB. We use an ionoplastic interlayer such as <strong>SentryGlas (SGP)<\/strong>SGP is up to 100 times stiffer and has a tear resistance 5 times higher than PVB. Kinematic Decoupling (Spider Fixing \/ Spider Glass)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ext-animate--on wp-block-paragraph\">Bridge structures move, flex, and vibrate. If we rigidly attached the glass to the steel structure, the deformation of the steel would shatter the transparent panels instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list ext-animate--on\">\n<li class=\"ext-animate--on\"><strong>Point fixing system (Rotules and Spiders):<\/strong> The glass must be \u201chung\u201d from the 90 cm internal load-bearing structure by means of articulated joints (spherical joints) fixed to spider structures (<em>spider<\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"ext-animate--on\"><strong>Expansion joints:<\/strong> Between one glass sheet and another there must be generous joints (20-30 mm) sealed with high modulus structural silicone with high movement capacity, capable of absorbing the millimetres of deformation of the transverse beam under load without transmitting parasitic stresses to the glass.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full ext-animate--on\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"901\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineerpalamara.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/sistema-fissaggio.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineerpalamara.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/sistema-fissaggio.png 901w, https:\/\/www.engineerpalamara.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/sistema-fissaggio-300x190.png 300w, https:\/\/www.engineerpalamara.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/sistema-fissaggio-768x486.png 768w, https:\/\/www.engineerpalamara.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/sistema-fissaggio-18x12.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 901px) 100vw, 901px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Detail of the spider fastening system<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ext-animate--on wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Summary of the advantages of this approach:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list ext-animate--on\">\n<li class=\"ext-animate--on translation-block\"><strong>Structural safety:<\/strong> The bridge doesn\u2019t \u201cknow\u201d that there is glass, because the loads pass through the steel lattice hidden in the 90 cm and in the pedestrian diaphragm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"ext-animate--on translation-block\"><strong>Almost total transparency:<\/strong> By using spiders and extra-clear glass, the visual impact of the 90 cm internal uprights is mitigated, giving the effect of a gallery suspended in the void.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"ext-animate--on translation-block\"><strong>Maintenance:<\/strong> If a glass pane is damaged, it can be replaced individually from the outside or inside without jeopardizing the stability of the crosspiece.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ext-animate--on wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Total glass thickness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ext-animate--on wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The final thickness depends on the height of the building and the dimensions of the individual fa\u00e7ade cells. However, in the world of high-performance curtain walls, there are very specific <strong>standard configurations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ext-animate--on wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">SGP interlayer for structural applications typically has a standard thickness of <strong>1.52 mm<\/strong> (or 2.28 mm for extreme cases).
